Donates $2,000

The Rotary Club of Manton has joined with the Traverse Bay Sunrise Rotary Club in an International Project, the Secondary School Bicycle Share Project in the Mangochi District of Malawi, Africa. Manton contributed $2,000.

Manton Rotarian Paul Sawin was so impressed with the project, that he invited members of the Traverse Bay Sunrise Rotary to present their program to the Manton membership.  As a result, the Manton Club gave $1000 to the program in 2023.  This year, they doubled their donation. Paul and his wife Jane will be traveling to Malawi with other Rotarians in the Traverse Bay Club to help distribute the bicycles to students and teachers!  Manton Club’s President Bob Colvin said he was thrilled for the small club in Manton to be a part of such an amazing project on the other side of the world.

As Rotarians, we engage in international service to help make the world a better place. In that spirit, members from the Traverse Bay Sunrise Rotary Club have traveled to the Mangochi District of Malawi in 2016, 2017, and 2019 to help construct new school facilities. Club members continue to address the educational needs in Malawi through the 2024 Secondary School Bicycle Share Project. This project has provided buffalo bikes for transportation to secondary school, established a bicycle repair business for maintenance, and vocational repair training for interested students. The result of the project is helping students who live long distances from school regularly attend in a state of mind effective for learning, increase safety of students as they travel to school, and decrease dropout rates. Ultimately, the goal is to lift up young women and men, offering them a better life through education.

This is all possible through a partnership with the Warm Hearts Foundation - a non-profit organization headquartered in Grand Rapids, MI, Norte Cycling of Traverse City, Elk Rapids Rotary Club, and Limbe Rotary Club in Malawi, and now, the Rotary Club of Manton.
