GRAND HAVEN TWP. — The Grand Haven High School Interact Club was recently awarded the Governor’s Service Award to commemorate its 23 years of connecting students with the local community through acts of service.
On Tuesday, math teacher and Interact Club advisor John Mauro joined last year’s club co-presidents Avery Rant and Simone Dennison – both now GHHS graduates who took initiative over the club’s numerous service projects during the previous school year – at a ceremony held at the Fox Theater in Detroit to accept the club’s Youth Impact Award.
The Youth Impact Award is given to individuals and organizations that help guide and encourage the positive development of Michigan youth in “making a difference in their communities, state and nation.”
The GHHS Interact Club was one of 43 individuals, businesses and nonprofit organizations recognized by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Community Service Commission for their commitment to serving and improving the lives of those in communities across the state through volunteerism and philanthropy.
For Mauro, the award was a “lifelong achievement” for the GHHS club, symbolizing each of his previous students’ commitment to making a difference in the Tri-Cities area.
